This book was a heavy read. The main focus was on depression and the debilitating effects it has on a person's life. the cause of the main character's depression was his self-loathing (because of his homosexuality) and his longing for his first love (more precisely, his soulmate). He felt trapped in a world where he would never be happy and therefore those people around him wouldn't be, either. Like I said, it was a heavy storyline. But, the author brought light and hope into the book with the addition of other strong characters and the promise of future happiness. However, there were a few cliffhangers in this story and no apparent sequels to provide resolution! What was the true nature of Brady and Matt's friendship? What was Lissa's connection to William's brother? What was the purpose of mentioning the overnight stay in the city and then titillating the reader with a veiled marriage proposal? ("Now I only needed him to promise me that forever in front of this crazy family of ours.") This book felt like it was several chapters short of being complete. I really liked this book, but felt severely shortchanged without the loose ends being tied up at the end. This book is incredibly heartbreaking, moving and the definition of romance. Cara Dee once again knows how to take a reader on a journey, one that isn't always comfortable but is life always comfortable?The character development is once again so realistic that I felt like I could interact with not just Kelly and William but the secondary characters as well. There is so much pain in this book, countless tears for many of the characters and overall a sense of what defines two people who seem to belong together--but are they able to overcome all the history and current struggles they both face? Life is full of hard choices…The world building in Camassia Cove was already well developed to begin with and yet the author finds new ways to paint an even more vivid picture. The completeness of this world continues to engage me as a reader.There are parts of this story that will make some readers uncomfortable. It can be messy at times. Cara Dee always weaves in topics that are important to discuss yet are rarely spoken about aloud. The characters have flaws, which makes them real. I am continually impressed that Cara Dee creates original romance that is based more on practicality than instalove. I want to see tension and buildup, I want to see imperfection because life isn't perfect and Cara Dee delivers.5 stars for realism. Highly recommend!
