Neil Gaiman's Overture is a strange work. By the original author and with a dream team of artists standing behind him, the return to the Sandman universe somehow manages to feel like a superfluous but lovely fan letter to the original series. Which I guess is what an overture should be. It hits all the notes of the story to come, only faster, and with more thunder. Like many remakes/reboots/returns to old material it also strives to answer every outstanding question or story beat from the older work in one go.And somehow in a story with anthropomorphic stars and a ferocious monologue/debate between Dream(s), it's less strange or exploratory in its writing than Sandman proper. But as a celebration of Morpheus the character, it's pretty great. The writing still sparkles, and the honed focus gives the narrative a strong drive as Dream carries on his quest to right a past wrong. At points the story is very playful, even sometimes weird in the way it's supposed to be.But for the first time, the art outshines Gaiman's writing. Good lord this is a pretty book. A city of stars is a riot of colors. The J.H. Williams is a master of the graphic novel form. Panel layouts are so well done that even a novice reader like me can't help but appreciate them. It's a little like watching Fury Road for the second time and noticing all the little things that you can never articulate liking in another movie, but are so pronounced and perfect that you can't help but acknowledge the craft. No praise is high enough. On the whole, Overture is a blast of color and story, tightly crafted and enjoyable. But it will leave you turning to your shelf, ready to dive in again to the original stories. So it's been YEARS since I've last read Sandman, but it's still one of my favorite comics of all time, and I was a little worried that this would be --well, sort of like Endless Nights, which was a good read, but not anything that I felt compelled to reread. But this surprisingly lived up to my expectations. First of all, the art is gorgeous. In particular, the coloring is absolutely stunning. The story has a ton of little nuggets and nods to the original series, plus a delightful twist that I genuinely did not see coming. And while it's a prelude, it's also continues after the end of The Wake. I know that doesn't make sense but it works, ok? Plus Daniel makes an appearance, and I love Daniel. I read this in one sitting this afternoon and already want to re-read it just to better absorb it all. I'm thinking that what I will end up doing is re reading all of Sandman, and then this again. Lovely book. Also, for this I suggest if you are on the fence about getting the physical version vs a digital copy, get the physical version. There are double spread pages in the physical copy, which has a very cool effect when opening. Plus, there's one page where the words fall like a circle, and end up upside down. Holding the physical copy, I was easily able to turn it upside down, but I think that would be harder to do with a tablet or mobile device that reorients itself.
