I was surprised at this latest novel by Meghan O'Brien at first. I've read only one other book by her, The Night Off. To me, this booked seemed like the author wanted to try exploring trauma and what it would be like for two people working through that and tying to build a relationship. I'd say she did a good job, this book was the complete opposite of The Night Off. The Night Off was pure erotica, very sexy, and quite enjoyable. Battle Scars went so much deeper, it showed that O'Brien can write erotica AND write about serious issues that individuals and couples face. We delved into psychological drama here, not sexual drama. O'Brien made you feel for this characters emotionally, she made you want them to make it.I enjoyed her serious take on romance, I won't lie, there are not many sexual scenes here, but that's fine. The theme of this book was healing, and finding your way back to loving, not sexy sex. Intimacy ruled here. One of the things I enjoy about this author is her ability to make her characters react in a way that a real person would. The characters thought things out before deciding, they didn't simply leap. All in all, it was nice to get into the characters head and watch them work through their issues and make it to the light at the end of the tunnel. Enjoyable! For what seemed almost like it would be a formula book that would kinda bounce over the rough concepts and lean into the romance this was a most pleasant and enlightening surprise. Written quite well, with characters of depth and breadth tackling some emotionally fraught and intellectually challenging issues in a manner both stimulatiing and satisfying without sacrificing the drama to surrealism. This effort deserves some sincere praise and a high recommendation! Thank-You!!
